A terrible confession, a secret passion, a magical quest and an enchanting solution. This blog has it all. Let me share with you my most magical non-chocolate Easter gift for children …
More chocolate than is decent
Dear heart, I am going to confess to you straight away. I’m afraid my children receive more chocolate from friends and relatives at Easter than really is decent.
Of course, this is lovely! The children are delighted and I am so grateful that everyone has been so kind as to give them a gift. All the chocolate eggs and animals get collected up into a large paper bag and then … the bag sits in the corner of the dining room for 6 months or more.
Please believe me. I am not a mean Mummy. I do let them eat it. However, I usually insist on two things before they dive into their stash. Firstly, fair-to-excellent behaviour during the day. Secondly, they eat their dinner (including those pesky vegetables) first. As you can imagine, these seemingly simple but surprisingly tricky little rules can mean that chocolate consumption can be quite drawn out.
I’ve no time to waste on “throw-away” gifts
Then, on top of the chocolate mountain challenge, another worry has always weighed heavily on my mind. It seems obvious to me that my little girls will not be little for so very long. And when they are big and grown, I’m not so sure that they will look back on their childhood and fondly remember the 12th chocolate rabbit that they received from Mummy and Daddy. It’s just not the stuff of treasured memories.
Personally, I believe that the act of giving a gift to someone you love is a gentle message about how you feel about them. So I’ve simply no time for “throw-away” gifts. Whenever I give my girls a present, it has to be something that they will adore. A treasure. A piece of their childhood memories. Simply put, it must be something that tells them clearly “darling, I love you so much that I have put my heart into finding this special something just for you.”
Fairly early on in my magical adventures as a Mother, I began to seek out delightful, non-chocolate Easter gifts
That is why, fairly early on in my magical adventures as a Mother, I began to seek out delightful, non-chocolate Easter gifts for my daughters.
Now for me the best kind of non-chocolate Easter presents for children are those that set a spark in their bright and brilliant imaginations. Gifts that encourage their creativity. Something that asks them ever so softly to think. Whether that is about the world around them, about people or places, about what kind of person they want to be, or best of all, about fantastical things.
Why? Because I want to let my children be little
Yes! Best of all fantastical things. Why? Because I want my girls to revel in being children. I want them to let their minds wander aimlessly along paths through made-up lands, full of mythical people. I’m going to hold “reality” (whatever that is!) at arms length for as long as I possibly can whilst they learn to be creative and thoughtful and to dream impossible dreams.
In short my sweet, I am going to let them be little for as long as they like. Unapologetically. And I am going to seek out non-chocolate Easter gifts that will help me do that.
