The simple spell of a Fairy Letter

I must confess, one of my favourite sounds in the morning is the light click-clack of my letterbox when the Fairy Nice Mail is delivered. In this blog I want to talk about just how magical it is to receive a Fairy letter through the Fairy Door. I am then going to share with you my 10 top tips for how to write a Fairy Letter that will totally enchant your little ones.

The joy of a little snail mail

It’s a barely describable thing, isn’t it! The little thrill you get when you realise someone has taken a moment or two to write you a letter. The fabulous fizz of anticipation as you catch sight of the envelope gingerly pushing itself into your home.

Who could this be from? What news does it bring?

10 top tips for writing letters from Fairies

The way we communicate with one another has changed so very much over the years. Now, with emails, texts, FaceTime and all those different social media channels, it seems that we are in almost constant contact with one another. Yet, I do believe that the humble letter sent by snail mail still has a place in this fast paced world of ours.

That is not to say that it is always the easiest thing to write a letter. First of all, one has to find a spare moment, and heaven knows those are precious few when you are dashing about being a Fairy Godmother! Then there is the frustration when we finally do go to put pen to paper and we find that we only have Fairy Dust on the brain. All sense of intelligent thought seems to have completely flown out of the window. Yet the satisfaction that you feel as you seal that envelope and push your creative masterpiece into the little red box is heart warming. And the delight in the heart of the lucky recipient as they peel your note open surely makes the whole project entirely worthwhile.

Write a Fairy letter, write a magical memory

When you ask children what their most magical memories are they invariably surprise us. Not least because the memories they choose are often the most commonplace of things. Receiving post, in particular, Fairy post is one of those things. I never fail to be astounded by just how precious the Fairy letters that appear at the Fairy Door really are to my children. They refold these tiny scraps of paper up so carefully and squirrel them away to be cherished for ever more.

For many children I know, it is in part a comfort to receive a Fairy letter. The idea that their Fairies are watching over them whilst they sleep, or go off on new adventures, reassures them that they are never alone even if Mummy and Daddy are not beside them. For some children this is just what they need to allow them to venture out into the big scary world without too much of a wobble.

Read this letter from Kaycee’s Mum and Dad to see just what I mean. Kayla’s Fairy letter helped her overcome night terrors and sleep peacefully at last.

For most children though, I think that it is the wonder that really enchant’s them when a Fairy letter arrives. This small piece of paper brings with it a promise of magical things. It promises that somewhere close the seemingly impossible is possible. It is a permission slip for child to embrace their truly bright and brilliant imagination.

Step into an enchanted world

So, I urge you to encourage your little ones to put pen to paper as soon as you can. Watch with glad heart as they furrow their brows over hard thought out questions for their Fairy neighbours in carefully scrawled notelets. Marvel at their brightly coloured artwork and intricate envelope decorations. Guide their tiny hands as they fold their creative genius into a neat and tidy little square. Drink in their hopes and their wonder as they carefully place their letter outside the Fairy Door before bed.

Because in this one simple act, this ordinary, everyday, common place act of putting pen to plain old paper, true magic is really at work. That little imagination is rubbing it’s eyes, stretching its arms out wide and blinking and yawning into life. From the small and simple seed of words or pictures on paper a new world, an enchanted world, behind a beautiful Fairy Door is being created.

That world is a wondrous place shared only by the most special people. Shared by just you and your little one. In that world only good things will every happen and everyday is filled with sunshine and rainbows. In that world your child feels safe and warm and loved without measure. Animals can talk. Mermaids swim in the sea. Brilliant bright stars make the sky sparkle like an deep ocean of shimmering diamonds throughout the night. Whatever once seemed impossible is now perfectly possible. The only limits are at the edges of your own imagination.

You see, my dear friend Phyllis summed it up beautifully when she said:

“A letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart.”
